heating and cooling system.
Summer & Hurricane
Season:
Summer and Hurricane Season are
here. Beneficial products that you may consider adding to your
home, for additional protection at this time of year, include a whole house surge protector and/or an air
conditioner surge protector. A power surge from lightning can
result in costly damages to the homeowner. The whole house surge
protector will help protect your electrical devices in your home during our famous Florida lightning
storms. Just remember……..If you leave it plugged in, you need to
protect it (computers, TV’s, appliances, phones, etc.). The cost
for a whole house surge protector is $300.00. An air conditioner
surge protector will protect your most expensive appliance….your air conditioner. Year round residents know, summer is not a time to be without air
conditioning. An air conditioner surge protector is
$100.00. Per LCEC, about 60% of surges occur inside the home from
microwave ovens or air conditioner motors.
Helpful
Hints:
In Southwest Florida, air conditioning in the
summer months is a necessity. However, your air conditioner is
often the largest part of your power cost. Some helpful ways to
cut down on your electrical bills this summer include:
-
Turn off ceiling fans when not in the
room.
-
Set your thermostat no lower than 78
degree Fahrenheit. Each degree below this temperature will add
8% to your cooling costs.
-
Going away for a while, consider
installing a dehumidistat ($90.00). If you set your air
conditioner to over 83 degrees Fahrenheit or turn it off completely, there is a good chance of mildew
forming. A dehumidistat turns the air conditioner on while you
are away to help control moisture, thus avoiding mildew problems.
-
Keep your filters clean! Once a month cleaning/replacing is recommended. (Helpful Reminder - When you pay your electric bill – Change/Clean your
A/C Filter.) We also have available, for order, electrostatic
filters. These filters remove small particles like pollen,
tiny dust and smoke that disposable filters leave behind, leaving the air smelling cleaner. No need to replace costly filters each month because electrostatic
filters are washable! More importantly, they come with a
lifetime warranty! When replacing your filter, it is very
important to make sure your filter is the correct size. If the
filter is too small or too large, it allows unfiltered air into the system, causing dust to build up in the
duct work and on coils, which will reduce the cooling efficiency.
-
Do not close off duct outlets in certain
rooms to cut down on the cooling of those rooms. This, in turn, will unbalance your air conditioning
system, reduce its efficiency and possibly even damage your duct system.
-
Always operate your air conditioner’s fan
setting on the thermostat in the “auto” position. This setting
will produce the most economic performance of your air conditioning system and also controls humidity best
in the home.
-
Window tint, especially on windows facing
east and west, will help reduce excessive heat intrusion into the home.
-
We recommend you service your system with
annual or even semi-annual check-ups to insure your system is running at its most efficient
level.
We hope these beneficial product/service
recommendations and helpful hints will save our customers unnecessary costly repairs. It is our goal at Custom Cooling and Heating, Inc. to provide our customers
